Tuesday 7:00 p.m. – The Service of Tenebrae, literally “The Service of Shadows,” takes us through a series of chanted psalms expressing loss and abandonment with intermittent readings providing a glimmer of hope, all while the candles and lights in the church are gradually extinguished, until at last we are totally in the dark, where we experience a sudden mysterious noise (could it be the resurrection?), and then depart by the light of the single candle that is restored to us. It’s an evening of deep mystical and strangely reassuring sadness, a drama bequeathed to us from the rituals of the monastic tradition, and provides yet another dimension to the great cathartic journey of Holy Week.
